The Detox You Didn’t Know Your Body Was Asking For
When elimination diets, supplements aren't working. What do you eat? How your nervous system, emotional patterns, and digestion are deeply connected
When You’re Tried Elimination Diets, Supplements… But Still Feel Off
I’ve been seeing a growing pattern in my practice.
Clients are coming in with symptoms like:
- Persistent bloating or gas
- SIBO or digestive imbalance
- Food sensitivities or histamine reactions
- Fatigue that doesn’t match their efforts
They’re eating whole, nourishing foods, often doing elimination diets.
They’re investing in high-quality supplements.
And yet—the body still feels reactive.
If this sounds familiar, I want to gently offer a different lens:
What if your body isn’t rejecting the food… but struggling to receive it?
The Pattern Beneath the Symptoms
Many of the individuals I work with share something else in common, often without realizing it.
They are:
- Deeply caring
- Highly responsible
- Attuned to others’ needs
- And often… quietly overriding their own
This is what we often call people-pleasing.
Not as a flaw, but as an adaptation.
From a young age, many learned that being “easy,” “helpful,” or “good” created safety and connection. Over time, this can come at a cost:
- Difficulty saying “no”
- A tendency to suppress emotions (especially anger)
- A constant internal state of “holding it all together”
And the body feels this.
Your Nervous System Sets the Stage for Digestion
Digestion is not just mechanical—it’s neurological.
For your body to properly:
- Produce stomach acid
- Release digestive enzymes
- Move food through the gut effectively
…it MUST be in a parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) state.
That has become increasingly difficult! When we have a nervous system shaped by chronic stress, self-suppression or over-accommodation, it often stays in a low-grade stress response.
This can lead to:
- Sluggish motility (a key contributor to SIBO)
- Incomplete digestion (leading to gas and bloating)
- Increased sensitivity to foods
So even the most nourishing meal…
may not be fully received.
The Gut, Histamine, and the “Over-Responsive” Body
Some clients (including my own son) also experience histamine-related symptoms:
- Flushing or skin reactions
- Sensitivity to certain foods
- A sense that the body is “overreacting”
Histamine is part of your immune system’s defense.
The immune system and nervous system are not separate — they function as one.
When the body perceives ongoing stress — whether physical or emotional — it can become more reactive overall.
This doesn’t mean your body is broken.
It means your body is protective.
The Hidden Load: Methylation & Processing Stress
For those navigating methylation challenges (such as MTHFR), this becomes even more important.
Your body is already working diligently to:
- Process internal and external stressors
- Support detoxification pathways
- Maintain balance within the nervous system
When emotional stress is layered on, it increases the overall load.
Because the body isn’t just processing what you eat…
It’s processing what you carry.
The Role of Healthy Anger (A Missing Piece)
One of the most overlooked aspects of health is healthy anger.
Not explosive or reactive anger, but the kind that says:
“This doesn’t feel right for me.”
This form of anger acts as a boundary, just like your immune system does.
When it’s consistently suppressed in favor of being “nice,” the body loses an important line of defense.
And over time, that suppression can turn inward, impacting mood, immunity, and overall resilience.
Before You Focus on What to Eat… Start Here
This is one of the most impactful shifts I guide clients through:
Before meals or supplements, pause and ask:
“How does my body feel right now? Is it ready to receive this?”
Simple practices can make a profound difference:
- Sitting down and removing distractions
- Taking a few slow, intentional breaths
- Softening the body and jaw
- Eating at a slower, more present pace
- Blessing or practicing gratitude for our food
Because nourishment isn’t just what you consume…
It’s what your body can absorb and utilize.
A Different Kind of Detox
When we think of detox, we often think of removing foods or supporting liver pathways.
But there is another layer:
Detoxing the patterns of self-suppression.
Gently releasing:
- The need to over-accommodate
- The habit of saying “yes” when you mean “no”
- The belief that your needs come last
This isn’t about doing it perfectly.
It’s about creating small moments of alignment that signal safety back to the body.
Supporting the Body Along the Way
As you begin to shift these patterns, your body may benefit from additional support:
- Mineral replenishment to calm the nervous system
- Digestive support to improve breakdown and absorption
- Whole-food nourishment to rebuild resilience
Not as a quick fix—
But as a way to work with your body, not against it.
If you’ve been feeling like your body is sensitive, reactive, or not responding the way you expected…
Consider this:
Your body may not need more restriction.
It may need more safety.
More support.
More space to be heard.
Because healing doesn’t begin when you push harder—
It begins when your body finally feels safe enough to receive.
